Metoha (Метоха)

Once a women's convent, the Metoha is now a favourite place to spend time among people from Asenovgrad. It is opposite the hill 'Anatemata' and offers magnificent view of both Asenovgrad and Assen's Fortress. There are benches for people to sit and the place is good for children, too. You can find it just above 'Geroge Mahala' neighbourhood. Everyone in Asenovgrad knows where Metoha is, so you will have no trouble finding it.

Everyone who visits Asenovgrad should visit the village of Bachkovo, too. Бачковски Манастир (Bachkovo Monastery)

Why visit:

Bachkovo Monastery is one of the oldest and biggest Bulgarian monasteries (founded in 1083). It is situated near the picturesque village of Bachkovo, at 9km distance from Asenovgrad. Preserved is the hiding place of the Bulgarian national hero Vasil Levski. One of the famous building in the monastery is the so-called Old Dining Room which has unique and exquisite wall-paintings. Every year people from Asenovgrad and the region organise a traditional procession, carrying the famous wonder-making icon of the Holy Mother, which is said to have healing abilities.

The Saint Nedelya monastery near Asenovgrad (and near the village of Zlatovrah) was once really important for the Bulgarian. It is the only monastery build under Ottoman Slavery without it having existed before. Soon after it was founded, it accommodated a school for the poor kids from the area. Today it is still working and registered as a cultural monument.
